Emily Fulop and Christian Peterson to receive 2012 Reiss Award
Special “Outside the Box” award to Justin Lange
Emily Fulop of West Stockbridge, Mass. and Christian Peterson of Philmont, N.Y. will each receive this year's Henriette Reiss Award for artistic endeavor, given annually to current or former graduates of the Hawthorne Valley Ealdorf School in Harlemville, N.Y. This year, the 20th annual Henriette Reiss Award will combine with the Hawthorne Valley's Senior Class Graduation. A check will be presented to each of them at the graduation held at the School on Saturday, June 9, at 2 pm.
A graduate of Lesley University with a BS in Expressive Arts Therapy, Ms. Fulop has written poetry as well as two full-length plays which have been publicly presented. She plans to travel to the UK for graduate studies in writing. Christian Peterson is a graduating Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School senior who has also written stories, poems and a play, and plans to further his education in the field of creative writing.
An additional award, new this year, will be presented to Justin Lange of Brooklyn, NY. Dubbed the “Outside the Box” award, it recognizes Mr. Lange’s creative technology research in developing an adaptation for the guitar to enable a player with limited hand strength to play the instrument.
The Henriette Reiss Award was established in 1993 by Elizabeth Papas of Philmont, N.Y., a long-time friend of the Reiss family. Henriette Reiss (1889-1992), a resident of Columbia County, N.Y., for twenty-five years, was an internationally respected artist and designer. Born in England and raised in Switzerland, she followed her husband, the artist Winold Reiss, to New York in 1914, where she soon established her own career and became well known for her textile and rug designs, as well as for her book jackets and advertising layouts. She also taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. For further information on Henriette Reiss, see winoldreiss.org/studiocircle/henriettereiss.
The graduation event is open to the public. A reception will follow the ceremony. For additional information, please call 518-672-4910 or go to hawthornevalleyschool.org/henriette-reiss-award-artistic-endeavor
