Grade 8 Play: The Middle Class Gentleman

The Class of 2019 presents Moliere’s The Middle Class Gentleman. First presented in 1670 before the court of Louis XIV at the Château of Chambord by Molière’s troupe of actors, the play satirizes attempts at social climbing and the bourgeois personality, poking fun both at the pretentious middle-class and the vain, snobbish aristocracy. The Middle Class Gentleman is written as a five-act comédie-ballet—a play intermingled with music, dance and singing.
