Nurturing Living Connections, Early Childhood through Grade 12

Exchange

Hawthorne Valley High School has an active student exchange program. Since the high school began more than 20 years ago, many tenth and eleventh graders have elected to experience Waldorf education — for periods from three months to one year — in other countries, including Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Columbia and Peru. By participating in this program, Hawthorne Valley students not only develop fluency in another language but also gain a direct experience of another culture.

In addition, our students, their families — in fact, our entire school community — have been enriched by having our foreign exchange students attend Hawthorne Valley School. Students who currently attend a Waldorf high school in another country may send a letter of intention and request an opportunity for exchange with a student from Hawthorne Valley. These are true exchanges with the students and families partnering in their exchange experience. Students typically participate in exchange during their 10th or 11th grade years. While we do our best to welcome international students our exchange opportunities are dictated by the number of individual students who wish to go on an exchange. Students who wish to attend Hawthorne Valley but are not able to make an exchange are welcome to attend as a boarding student for as short as two main lessons or for as long as an entire year.

For more information or to request a foreign exchange, please contact the Admissions Office by e-mail or by calling 518-672-7092 x 111. Read about the application process here.
